Johannesburg, 23 June 2018 – The ‘Tropics Business Mixer’ 2018 was truly an event like no other… A great opportunity for South African and international Entrepreneurs in the country to network with a room packed with members of governments, business owners, professionals, young entrepreneurs, activists and business start ups from all across Johannesburg. It was a networking afternoon that gave a taste of what’s to come on 16-20 October 2018 at the Parktonian Protea Hotel during the fast-approaching TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT that aims to celebrate Africa and its thriving business communities!

The #TropicsBusinessMixer was a bit of a show, a bit of fun and a great way for delegates to meet new people and get those business ideas buzzing. Last year’s Summit created a real buzz about business startups in South Africa and the continent. This year is set to be even bigger and better as we invite you to celebrate Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu Centenary. Plus we have some exciting news which we will be revealing on the evening of our Tropics Gala Dinner & Tropics Awards where two anti-apartheid Legends, Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, will be honoured posthumously. The only way to find out is to be there… and the first step is simply booking your tickets through Computicket .

If you missed the #TropicsBusinessMixer2018 held at Radisson Blu Sandton, here are some of the highlights…

The ‘Tropics Business Mixer’ is the third conference organized by TROPICS MAGAZINE and its long-time partners, dedicated to the local business services community and the region of Gauteng (which means ‘place of gold’), considered the economic hub of South Africa and which contributes heavily in the financial, manufacturing, transport, technology, and telecommunications sectors, among others. Gauteng also plays host to the #TropicsBusinessSummit and also to a large number of overseas companies requiring a commercial base in and gateway to Africa.

The Tropics Business Mixer 2018 pre-networking event also tackled the challenges brought by the new generation of African Leaders, allowing them to share resourceful approaches on doing business on the African continent, powering the Intra-African Trade and implementing policies that work for Entrepreneurs on the ground.

Together as a community, the purpose of the pre-launch event was to forge new synergies, engage new partners, investors and facilitate best practice sharing between companies of various industries, to acknowledge the challenges and the opportunities ahead, to develop a clearer vision for Investors and Entrepreneurs about their strategies and to propose a set of solutions that could find their implementation ahead of the main event which is scheduled from 16 to 20 October 2018 at the Parktonian Protea Hotel by Marriott.

The cofounders of the TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT namely, TROPICS HOLDINGS, CREB HOLDING and MERiTS GROUP, along with their Strategic Partners SACONO and PILANE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE shared their expertise on Investing in Africa, Entrepreneurship, Financial Partnerships and Social Development.

Participating companies such as TURQUOISE HARMONY INSTITUTE, KAMAROUTES TRAVEL DESIGNERS, AFRICA BUSINESS RADIO, MAMOYO MEDIA, FOREVER LIVING, ABR DIALOGUES, YOUNG WOMEN IN BUSINESS NETWORK to name but a few, presented their case studies during mini-talk sessions and a closing panel discussion, which engaged participants in meaningful discussions around entrepreneurship and innovation.

The cherry on top was the keynote address by Mrs. Nontsikelelo SISULU-SINGAPI, Chief Director at Department of Women in The Presidency and Chairperson of the YOUNG WOMEN IN BUSINESS NETWORK and Granddaughter of the late South African anti-apartheid Activist, Mama Albertina Sisulu, and the wife of fellow Activist Walter Sisulu who was affectionately known as ‘Ma Sisulu’ throughout her lifetime by the South African public.

« Mam’Albertina stood for the emancipation of women. This struggle is still not over. When we talk about prioritising investment in women is about freeing women« , said Nontsikelelo Sisulu-Singapi Chief Director at @Dept_of_Women and MaSisulu’s granddaughter

In closing, Gauteng MEC for Arts and Culture, Mrs. Faith MAZIBUKO, brought the house down during her closing remarks. She attended the TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT 2018 pre-launch event to commend the organizing committee and all their Partners for their great efforts in branding South Africa as the top business destination on the continent.

Officially announced as the new Matron of the TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT by Mrs. Tintswalo Cassandra MAKHUBELE (General Secretary of SACONO), MEC Faith MAZIBUKO thanked the organizing committee for choosing the Gauteng Province as their province of choice. She also emphasized on unity among cultures, ubuntu, and most importantly she pushed the agenda on Women Entrepreneurship and Leadership. Exploring the impact of South African Women in Leadership, she reminded the young generation to draw strength from the female struggle icons and emphasized on the fact that leadership has to become intergenerational, with a mechanism to bring in young people and work with them. She particularly highlighted that the Gauteng Province would start generating awareness about the upcoming Summit and will facilitate connections at the Provincial and Government levels for not just a successful Summit but to stimulate Intra-African Trade which is also one of the missions of the TROPICS BUSINESS SUMMIT.
