Why she is in the Top 750
Since 2015, the African DOers Powerlist by Tropics Magazine has recognised 750 leaders annually, selected exclusively on documented impact, Agenda 2063 alignment, and SDG contribution. No lobbying. No purchase. Impact only.
Zipporah Maubane earns her place on every count. As Head of Communications and Advocacy at the African Union Development Agency — NEPAD, she sits at the nerve centre of Africa’s most ambitious continental development agenda. With over 28 years of experience across the private sector, civil society, and pan-African institutions, she has built one of the most formidable communications careers on the continent, from Coca-Cola Southern and East Africa, to Sasol, Altron, Zutari, and now the institution charged with translating Agenda 2063 from aspiration into action.
She does not manage communications. She architects narratives that move resources, shift perceptions, and position Africa as a global powerhouse, on her terms and the continent’s.
The Jury’s Assessment AfCFTA Score: 9.0/10 · SDGs Score: 9.2/10
The jury was clear. Zipporah Maubane occupies a unique and irreplaceable position in the African development ecosystem: she is the communications architecture behind the continent’s most strategic institutional voice. At AUDA-NEPAD, her work on resource mobilisation and advocacy directly shapes how African governments, multilateral partners, and private sector actors perceive, engage with, and fund Agenda 2063 priorities. That is not soft power, that is infrastructure.
Her 28-year private sector trajectory, building brands across Coca-Cola, Sasol, Altron, and UK’s DPD, gives her something rare in institutional communications: the commercial rigour and market intelligence to make development narratives land with business audiences as powerfully as they do with policy audiences. She advances SDG 10 (reduced inequalities through inclusive development narratives), SDG 16 (strong institutions through strategic advocacy), SDG 17 (partnerships through resource mobilisation and stakeholder engagement), SDG 8 (economic growth positioning through brand and digital transformation narratives), and SDG 4 (quality education through knowledge-sharing and capacity communications).
On AfCFTA, her role at AUDA-NEPAD places her at the direct intersection of continental integration communications, shaping how the trade area is understood, embraced, and activated by African citizens, businesses, and governments alike.
Priority expansion markets: Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Senegal, and Ethiopia, the continent’s five most strategic communications and advocacy markets where her institutional and private sector dual expertise is immediately deployable.
The Jury’s Signature Citation
“Zipporah Maubane understands what most communicators miss: a narrative is not what you say, it is what moves people to act. For 28 years, across boardrooms and institutions, she has been moving Africa’s most important audiences toward the continent’s most important goals. At AUDA-NEPAD, she is doing it at continental scale. That is the definition of an African DOer.” — African DOers International Jury, 2026
