Why she is in the Top 750
Since 2015, the African DOers Powerlist by Tropics Magazine has recognised 750 leaders annually, selected exclusively on documented impact, Agenda 2063 alignment, and SDG contribution. No lobbying. No purchase. Impact only.
Yvonne Mburu earns her place on every count. Scientist, immunologist, entrepreneur, and founder of Nexakili, she has spent over 15 years at the frontier of cancer immunology and is now channelling that scientific authority into one of the continent’s most urgent infrastructure gaps: the connection of Africa’s global professional diaspora to its home markets. A doctorate in immunology. A postdoctoral fellowship at the Institut Curie in Paris, funded by the Cancer Research Institute. Winner of the inaugural Lloyd J. Old Memorial Award. Appointed by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Presidential Council for Africa. Young Leader of the AfricaFrance Foundation. UNLEASH Global Talent — among the world’s best minds working on the UN SDGs.
She did not choose between science and Africa. She built the bridge between them.
The Jury’s Assessment AfCFTA Score: 8.8/10 · SDGs Score: 9.3/10
The jury was unanimous. Yvonne Mburu represents one of the most intellectually powerful and strategically necessary profiles in this cohort. Nexakili is not a networking platform, it is a human capital infrastructure play. By connecting African and African-diaspora health professionals, scientists, and technologists into a single global collaborative network, she is operationalising what AfCFTA’s services and knowledge economy corridors require most: the free movement of African expertise, across borders, disciplines, and regions.
Her work is a direct accelerator of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being through cancer immunotherapy access and health innovation), SDG 4 (Quality Education through knowledge transfer and interdisciplinary collaboration), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through digital platform building), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities by mobilising diaspora talent for continental benefit), and SDG 17 (Partnerships through the Nexakili global professional network). Her appointment to the Presidential Council for Africa by President Macron places her at the intersection of institutional diplomacy and civil society transformation, a combination the jury identified as rare and replicable.
Priority expansion markets under AfCFTA: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, and Rwanda — all active health innovation and digital economy hubs where Nexakili’s platform infrastructure and diaspora mobilisation model are immediately scalable within AfCFTA knowledge and services corridors.
The Jury’s Signature Citation
“Yvonne Mburu understood early that Africa’s greatest untapped resource is not under the ground, it is across the world. She built Nexakili to bring it home. A cancer immunologist who turned her scientific rigour into continental infrastructure — this is precisely the kind of exponential thinking the African DOers Powerlist was created to honour.” — African DOers International Jury, 2026
