Behind the Scenes: How African Leaders Shape Global Diplomacy Today

In 2025, African leaders are stepping decisively onto the global stage, reshaping diplomacy with a renewed vision that blends regional consolidation and global influence. This year marks a historic moment as South Africa assumes the G20 presidency for the first time ever, signaling Africa’s growing role in international affairs. At forums like Davos and through the African Union (AU), African states are not only advocating for the continent’s interests but are actively driving solutions to global challenges — from climate change and economic inequality to peace and security.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, framed Africa’s leadership as essential for rekindling global cooperation. He emphasized that tackling 21st-century challenges — climate crises, pandemics, poverty, terrorism, migration, and technological disruption — requires “mutually beneficial cooperation and collaboration.” African countries have been leading by example, doubling down on climate commitments even as some major economies retreat. The announcement of the Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor, a vast conservation and green development initiative in the Democratic Republic of Congo, exemplifies this proactive stance. This project not only protects biodiversity but also promises over 500,000 jobs, including for youth demobilized from armed groups, illustrating how diplomacy and development intersect.

Leadership transitions across Africa’s major institutions in 2025 are also pivotal. The AU chairperson race features prominent candidates like Kenya’s Raila Odinga and Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, each advocating for stronger regional cooperation, economic integration, and a more assertive African voice in global governance. These elections are more transparent and participatory than ever, reflecting a continent eager to assert its sovereignty and shape its destiny on the world stage.

Africa’s integration into global governance structures is accelerating. The AU’s permanent seat at the G20 and the inclusion of Egypt and Ethiopia in BRICS signal a shift from symbolic representation to active leadership. Yet, African diplomats continue to push for reforms such as a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, arguing that Africa’s 55 countries and 1.4 billion citizens deserve equitable influence in global decision-making.

Behind the scenes, African leaders are leveraging diplomacy to harness the continent’s demographic dividend. With 60% of Africa’s population under 25 and projected to account for one in three working-age people worldwide by 2050, leaders are prioritizing youth empowerment, digital innovation, and infrastructure development. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat’s Secretary-General Wamkele Mene highlights how this youthful energy fuels a “cutting-edge spirit of innovation” that can drive Africa’s economic transformation.

Peace and security remain foundational to Africa’s diplomatic agenda. The AU is actively mediating conflicts in Sudan, the Great Lakes, Somalia, and Cameroon, recognizing that stability is essential for sustainable development. These efforts often involve complex negotiations and partnerships with international stakeholders, showcasing African leadership in conflict resolution.

In sum, African leaders today are not passive participants but dynamic architects of global diplomacy. Their efforts to consolidate regional unity, champion climate action, promote economic integration, and advocate for fair representation are reshaping how Africa engages with the world. As 2025 unfolds, the continent’s diplomatic influence is set to expand, reflecting a new era where Africa leads not just within its borders but on the global stage.
