Based between Saint-Louis and Dakar, Souleymane Kébé has become one of Senegal’s most influential film producers, known for championing authentic African narratives that resonate globally. As founder of Sunuy Films and Astou Productions, Kébé has been instrumental in producing a slate of critically acclaimed documentaries, feature films, and series that spotlight the richness and complexity of African life.
A graduate of Université Stendhal 3 in Grenoble with specialized training in film production at the Lussas Documentary Workshop, Kébé combines technical expertise with a deep cultural sensitivity. His productions are marked by their intimate storytelling and social relevance, often exploring themes of identity, tradition, and modernity.
Among his most notable works is Le Voyage de Talia (2022), a poignant documentary that explores personal and collective memory. In 2023, he produced Banel & Adama, a feature film selected for the official competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, which tells the story of a young couple’s love in a remote Senegalese village, blending poetic imagery with social commentary. That same year, Dent pour dent and Sira further cemented his reputation for backing bold, thought-provoking cinema.
Kébé’s role extends beyond production; he is a key figure in nurturing Senegal’s film industry infrastructure. Through Astou Productions, he supports emerging directors and fosters collaborations that bridge local talent with international platforms. His commitment to elevating African cinema also includes curatorial and programming work at festivals, helping to amplify voices often overlooked on the global stage.
His work has garnered attention not only for artistic merit but also for its impact on cultural representation. Kébé believes in cinema as a tool for dialogue and transformation, stating in interviews that African stories deserve to be told by Africans themselves, with nuance and authenticity.
In addition to his film projects, Kébé is active in mentoring young producers and filmmakers, contributing to the growth of a sustainable creative ecosystem in Senegal and beyond. His vision is clear: to position African cinema not as a niche but as a vibrant, integral part of world cinema.
As African film continues to capture international acclaim, Souleymane Kébé stands out as a producer whose work bridges tradition and innovation, local roots and global reach — shaping the continent’s cinematic future one story at a time.
